This briefing on the Circular Economy in the Western Balkan six (WB6) countries, specifically focuses on waste management as a dominant challenge for policy incentivization for circularity in the region. While our first briefing on circular economy addressed waste management as a key pillar, this looks into waste policies/legislation in WB6 as an integral part of the circular economy. In order for the circular economy to function, waste needs to be recycled or reused rather than sent to landfill or other terminating facilities such as incinerators.
The briefing offers a short overview of the European Union's (EU) legal framework on the circular economy model, followed by most relevant waste management policy/legislation in WB6 countries, policy implementation examples and related challenges.
This is the Balkan Forum's second briefing, part of a series on the circular economy, which will be followed by a third focusing on mapping the main actors. The fourth and final will present concrete examples of circular economy implementation across the region.
